Kaitahi // Episode 20

I don't know about you but I'm a BIG fan of a smoothie for breakfast (except right now where porridge is winning out on these cold winter days!!). But on days when I eat breakfast at work or on the go with the 3-year-old – it's often not super practical to transport a pre-mixed smoothie (or the whole blender!).

That's where these clever people at Kaitahi come in. They've packed all the smoothie goodness into drops, which are flash frozen – then you just add water and shake and your fresh smoothie is ready to roll. Genius!

Even better, the Kaitahi smoothie drops are made with lots of local and native Māori superfoods, such as kūmara, pūhā and kawakawa.

And best of all, Kaitahi - which means "as one" - is even more unique because it's owned by the Ngaa Rauru iwi, based in South Taranaki. I'm really interested to hear a bit of a different perspective and different ownership structure today on the show, and find out a bit more about how this all works in practise.

This combination of superfoods, tradition, creating jobs, using local ingredients, innovation, and all round handiness, meant I just had to get one of the iwi representatives – Arohaina – on the phone for a chat all about how this all came about and where to next for this seriously cool and unique NZ business. Come along with me and let's find out more...

You can find Kaitahi Superfood Smoothie Drops at Countdown supermarkets around the country - find your closest stockist on their website (www.kaitahi.com). Follow them on Instagram to stay up to date with their latest innovations and plans (@kaitahi).
